Summary

In cooperation with trade and brand companies and civil society organisations, the German Environment Agency has compiled the brochure "Environmental Standards in the Textile and Shoe Industry - A Guideline Based on the EU's BREF Notices". The guide informs trade and brand companies as well as suppliers about best available techniques (BAT) according to the European BAT Textiles and Leather Industries on ways to implement these standards in global supply chains. BAT datasheets provide a detailed collection of information on the processes and techniques of the respective industrial sector, their environmental impact, and techniques that contribute to reducing and avoiding pollution.

The goal of the project is to update the brochure "Environmental Standards in the Textile and Shoe Industry". Particular attention is paid to include the revised BAT reference document on the Leather Industry and to involve stakeholders of the textile and leather industries who are relevant users of the brochure. The brochure shall help retailers to implement BAT with their suppliers. A large and growing part of the global textile and leather production takes place in developing and emerging countries. The spread of BAT in these countries has the opportunity to initiate substantial improvements in health and environmental protection, since production is often still associated with enormous environmental pollution. Leading trade and brand companies are interested in establishing higher environmental standards based on BAT in their supply chain. The aim of the project is to promote the use of BAT in the global production chains of the textile and leather industries by providing an up-to-date brochure on the use of BAT.
